Picking my favorite casserole recipe is like picking a favorite child, you just can’t do it. But, if I was really pressed, I’d have to say this is near the very top. The alfredo gives it a creamy, nutty flavor and the onion and broccoli get perfectly roasted and are such a compliment to the bacon. It really is just… really good, and it’s such a comfort food for me. The best part is that it’s a healthier weeknight dinner with no junk or alfredo sauce with sugar or additives. With under 10 ingredients, it’s quick and easy to throw together.
Ingredients in This Whole30 Chicken Bacon Alfredo Casserole
This recipe is really straightforward in that it doesn’t take much for it to all come together. The key here though is to have the chicken and bacon already cooked. I typically always have roasted or shredded chicken in the fridge as part of my meal prep each week, but if you don’t, you can microwave, boil or roast the chicken to cook in through quickly. The bacon will also take only a few minutes to pan fry if you haven’t done so already, and then simply set it aside to cool before you chop it.
You’ll also need broccoli, a white or yellow onion, and hash browns. I use frozen hash browns, and they are fairly simple to find in major grocery stores with no sugar added these days. Target and Walmart carry them in the freezer section. You could also shred your own potato by using a wide cheese grater.
Dairy-Free Alfredo Sauce
The last ingredient needed to pull the entire casserole together is the dairy-free alfredo sauce. You can opt to make your own, but I am loving the new Primal Kitchen Garlic Alfredo Sauce. It’s one of the 5 new pasta sauces they’ve created, and it’s gotta be my favorite. I love having it already in the pantry ready for nights I don’t feel like doing much other than dumping the sauce into a casserole or a skillet and having a healthy meal on the table.
Primal Kitchen also has another dairy-free alfredo flavor besides the garlic alfredo sauce, which is the classic alfredo. Both are made with cashew butter and are also keto friendly. The other sauces in their new pasta sauce line are tomato basil marinara, roasted garlic marinara and dairy-free vodka sauce.

How to Make this Whole30 and Paleo Chicken Bacon Alfredo Casserole
Once you have all of your ingredients prepared and the oven preheating, you’re going to add them into a 3-4 quart casserole dish after you’ve lightly greased it. Pour the alfredo sauce into the casserole dish and use a spoon to incorporate the sauce into the rest of the ingredients, being gentle as to not smash the vegetables while you stir to combine it.

After that, you’re going to pop it into the oven and let it bake for about 35 minutes, or until the top is slightly browned. This time may vary depending on what size casserole dish you used and how thick the casserole was in said dish, or by oven. This Whole30 casserole recipe is awesome as leftovers (seriously, so good), and it’s good in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can also double this recipe, and bake it for about 50 minutes if still using a 3-4 quart casserole dish.

Hi, do you lay the hash browns at the bottom of the dish or “crumble” them into the mix? Thanks
paleobailey says
Sorry for the late reply here! I do mix it all into the dish. I’ll clarify in the recipe. Thank you!
Caitlin says
Hello. This looks delicious. Do we cook the hasbrowns before putting in the dish to bake? Or put in dish frozen?
paleobailey says
Sorry for the late response here – your comment was filtered into a spam folder for some reason! They go in frozen 🙂

The graphic says paleo but potatoes aren’t actually paleo, correct?
paleobailey says
Hey there! They’ve been included as a nutrient rich vegetable for over a decade in the paleo community, as new studies and research has been done on their many nutritional benefits, how long potatoes have been around, and their purpose/place in a healthy paleo diet. I’ll leave some links for you to check out on why all potatoes have been considered to be Paleo for around 10+ years now by most of the Paleo thought leaders such as Mark Sisson and Robb Wolf. You’re unlikely to find a paleo book or cookbook published recently that says they’re a no-go now, either. ? That being said, if you choose to leave them out, you totally can – whatever works for you!!

Hi! I would love to make this recipe, but is the primal kitchen alfredo sauce definitely whole 30? It doesn’t have the “Whole 30 Approved” seal on it like their other products.
paleobailey says
It is Whole30 compliant! All of the ingredients are compliant. It’s not labeled as “approved” because the Whole30 company, as a general rule, doesn’t endorse any nut cheese products (even if they’re compliant and fine to eat during a Whole30). Because this alfredo uses cashew cream, it falls under that category. They don’t want people going to town on nut cheeses, but unless you’re spooning alfredo sauce right out of the jar, and alfredo is used with meat and veggies, it’s a nonissue. They just don’t approve it because it would muddy the waters for the other nut cheese products like cream cheese replacements that are much more likely to be over-consumed. Hope that makes sense!

LOVE this recipe. I double it and cook two pans to freeze one because our family just always wants this recipe! So great for everyone. kids and adults can’t get enough.
Alicia says
So you freeze the fully cooked thing? How do you heat it up the day that you eat that one? I want to do that for the sake of making a week day meal easier!
Karly says
Hi there! Is there any of the garlic Alfredo sauce in store that you were talking about? I haven’t been able to find any.
paleobailey says
Hey there! They are in quite a few stores.. Kind of depends on where you live with what stores are where so I’ll just list some of the ones I know that they’re in. Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, Fresh Thyme, Walmart, Wegmans, Barons, HyVee
Shannon says
I’m confused. Hash browns are not paleo. How is this a paleo recipe when it includes hash browns???

This was the absolute best recipe! My entire family loved it even my husband who hates everything dairy free! He had no idea the primal kitchen Alfredo sauce was whole30 compliant and even made those ‘taste delicious noises’ during each bite! This recipe was easy to make. I had all the ingredients on hand and will definitely make again in the future! Thanks for all your yummy recipes!
paleobailey says
I am so glad to hear this, Katrina!! Thank you SO much for taking the time to share this with me – it’s so, so appreciated! <3 - B

Hi!! Love your recipes!!! My husband can’t eat broccoli. Have you tried any other veggies in this recipe? Thanks!
paleobailey says
I haven’t personally, but I’m sure you could swap it out with most veggies 🙂
Bri says
FYI, the first time I made this I didn’t have broccoli so I used cauliflower instead and it was AMAZING!
Kathryn says
This looks delicious! I think I have all the ingredients to make it this week. Do you have to thaw the hash browns first or do you put them on frozen?
paleobailey says
I put them in frozen 🙂
Suzanne says
Hi is there a special mind of bacon you use? My husband swears bacon is not whole30 compliant
paleobailey says
Some bacon is compliant (even “Approved” by Whole30!), and some isn’t. You’ll want to look for a brand that has no added sugar or off-limits ingredients. Here’s a really helpful list of Whole30 compliant bacon brands! https://www.wholekitchensink.com/whole30-compliant-bacon/

This recipe… Is amazing! My boyfriend and I have made it twice now and although our grocery store does not have primal kitchens Alfredo, we have just been using pregos cauliflower Alfredo. So, ours is not whole 30 or dairy free but we add extra broccoli and use half hash browns and half cauliflower rice and it is so bomb! We moved away from Minnesota and always crave hot dishes and this totally satisfies our craving without killing our gut ?. Thank you!!!
paleobailey says
Ah thank you SO much!! I’m so glad you love it, and I’m also so appreciative of this feedback! It’s super helpful to know how it goes with these changes!! <3 - B

On January Whole30! Made this and split it into two pans so I could share one with a friend also doing it. It came out a little dry, probably because I split it and possibly over baked it in the smaller pans. So! We added a scoop of compliant marinara when we heated up our portions up and Oh My Gawd it was bomb. Tastes like a pink sauce and almost just ALMOST like the 5 cheese ziti at Olive Garden. I was so so so happy I ate two bowls. Thanks Bailey!
paleobailey says
Oh this is SO great to hear! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this feedback (and for making my recipe!! 🙂 ) – it’s so appreciated <3 - B

If I could give this recipe 100 stars, I would. I have pretty much made this every week since I discovered the recipe a few weeks ago. I love taking it for lunch everyday; I’ve made it to have on hand for a quick meal I can heat up. It’s so simple and easy to make.. not to mention delicious! I’ve told everyone who will listen about this recipe; I CANNOT recommend it enough!

This was so good! And the easiest thing ever!! I just boiled chicken while chopping the broccoli and onion and and all said and done it came together in under 15 mins! I use Costco pre cooked chicken a lot so now I have a great recipe as a go to for uses for it
paleobailey says
Yes!! Love their pre cooked chicken as well. Makes throwing together meals so easy 🙂 I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe!!

This is such a great recipe!! We ate it all, kids included, multiple servings for each of us which rarely happens with my picky eaters!! So simple! So good! Thanks Bailey!

Sarah says
Can you sub anything for the potatoes/hash browns?
paleobailey says
I’m not sure, I haven’t tried it with anything else. You may be able to do cauliflower rice or broccoli rice but you’d probably need quite a bit to take the place of the potatoes. Not sure if that would get too watery though instead of absorbing the sauce like the hash browns do.
sarah says
Okay, awesome. Thank you! I’ll have to try it out!
